Movie Review "Invictus"

Invictus (2009)
MPAA Rating: PG 13
Reviewed by Gonzalo Vidal Pérez on October 30th, 2014
Genre: Sports, Drama
With: Matt Damon, Morgan Freeman
Directed by: Clint Eastwood
Distributor: Warner Bros Pictures

If you are a sportsman or you really like sports, this movie is what you are looking for. Invictus is about how Nelson Mandela wants to grow South Africa as a recognised country in the world, from different aspects such as economical, social, among others. In this movie the main aspect is sports, specifically rugby.

Invictus is placed in the time when Mandela was released from jail after 27 years locked up. Then, when Mandela became the president, he demanded the same rights for white and black people. Also, Mandela wanted to improve South Africa; and taking advantage of the rugby world cup, which it was going to be in the same country, Mandela talks privately with the captain of the "Springbooks", Francois Pienaar, and asks him to do their best effort on the championship, because it will be transmited on T.V all around the world, so the people can appreciate their work.

Once Mandela came out of jail, he took charge of South Africa as the president. On the other hand, the South Africa's rugby team "Springooks" suffers a menace because of their bad campaign, and that's why a group of people votes to change their name to "Petreas" and do some changes on the team if they don't want to live a wrapped moment. But right before the decision is taken, Mandela arrives to defend the team's rights, and to keep their name to "Springbooks". Then, with Mandela's new campaign "One team, one country", the "Springbooks" visits a poor village in the outsides of the city and they play with the black kids and they teach some rules of rugby, showing that black people are the same as white. And then, when the world cup starts, with their heads up and the support of the entire country, they play with all they have.

In conclusion, and in my opinion, it is a beautiful movie, because we can appreciate all the things Mandela lived in his 27 years in prison and all the things that happened inside South Africa related with racism. The director must had payed a huge paychek because of the costumes used in the movie, the sounds effects are really good, the perfect performance of Morgan Freeman as Nelson Mandela, etc. On the other hand, we must not see black people as skunks, as pangas for our society, or ulcers just because they're black. We must see them as people who are equal to us, because we both have the same human rights.

Letter related to sports

October 23th, 2014,

Dear Steven,

The reason I'm writing to you is because 3 days ago, playing football, I suffered a fracture in my ankle when in a corner I jumped to hit the ball. I scored the goal, but when I fell to the ground unfortunately It happened what I recently told you.

Now I'm in a treatment in the hospital. the doctor said that I have to take a special treatment because we're not kids any more, we're close to the 30's, and because of that my bones are weaker and the don't regenerate as fast as a little boy. About my treatment I must go every day for 3 or 4 weeks to the chiropractor to do lots of exercises as putting my foot on hot water, apply magnetic resonance, etc. and to finish, I will be 3 months out!

I hope we can see each other soon so I can tell you more details.

Regards,
Bruce.

Opinion Essay Draft

In this essay I'll be presenting and answering a very particularly question of contamination: Is global warming the most significant environmental problem facing us today? And my answer is no.

For so long, we humans have caused so many disasters that finished by destroying the Ozone layer. In these disasters we can find fires, oil spills, cutting down forests of trees, etc. In addition, according to nrdc, in the United States , electric power emits  more than two billion of tons of carbon dioxide each year. Global warming directly affects us on everything we do and unfortunately every single actions we do produce contamination, that's why we have to learn to deal with it but what we can do is to produce much less contamination by using green and renewable energy.

Moreover, according to the Union of Concerned Scientists, "not only are global warming-induced changes currently underway , and the climate hot map arranges current and future climate impacts into   5 main groups: People, Freshwater, Oceans,Ecosystems and Temperature. Inside this groups we can find very important elements such as temperature and ourselves, people".

And yet , people still think the opposite, such as Bernard L. Weinstein at national journey.com. "One can think of at least a dozen more dangerous phenomena that could destroy us long before growing greenhouse emissions cause the oceans to rise and species to die off" (2013)

In conclusion, I seriously think that we have to take care of our environment, because in the future we could possibly face and increase of temperatures from the coldest places to the tropical and desertical   zones of our planet Earth. Years before, we were afraid of global warming and its consequences, and now it became true, such as the melting glaciers in the north and south pole, as I mentioned before, the ozone layer, etc. Not forgetting our health, as we know, the sun rays causes skin cancer, that's why we have to protect our skin with sun screen and with sun glasses for our eyes. So I will end ny saying that we really have to consider the global warming and finish with air pollution, heavy sun rays, melting glaciers and the most important, the danger of our planet.

In the United States, electric power plants emit more than two billion tons of carbon dioxide each year, or roughly 40 percent of total emissions. The nation's landmark air pollution law could cut that number significantly.

Not only are global warming-induced changes currently underway, but scientists also expect additional effects on human society and natural environments around the world. Some further warming is already unavoidable due to past heat-trapping emissions; unless we aggressively reduce today's emissions, scientists project extra warming and thus additional impacts.
The Climate Hot Map arranges current and future climate impacts into five main groupings:
  • People
  • Freshwater
  • Oceans
  • Ecosystems
  • Temperature
Each of these major groupings, in turn, is divided into specific categories that describe more fully some of the consequences we may face. Click on any of the categories listed on the left for more information.

America Can Lead by Example
Global warming from the burning of fossil fuels is not the planet’s biggest problem. One can think of at least a dozen more dangerous phenomena that could destroy us long before growing greenhouse gas emissions cause the oceans to rise and species to die off. But that’s not to say we shouldn’t be
concerned about climate change.
The best way for the United States to “lead the way on a comprehensive, international approach to addressing global warming” is by example. GHGs in America are lower today than 20 years ago, even with an economy that’s 50 percent larger, mainly because we use energy more efficiently. Today, we can produce a dollar of GDP with half the energy input required a few decades ago. At the same time, we’re substituting clean-burning natural gas for coal in power generation and industrial boilers. We could further reduce GHGs by developing the infrastructure to fuel more of the country’s 300 million motor vehicles with compressed natural gas (CNG) and liquefied natural gas (LNG).

News Project "Draft"

Hello, my name is Gonzalo Vidal and I going to present a movie review about "Dawn of the Planet of the Apes". Planet of the Apes is an american media franchise that consists in movies, series, novels and some books that tells about humans and apes that clashes for control.

"Dawn of the Planet of the Apes" has lots of expectations from the people. The reason is that the previous movie, "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" was a really good movie, the use of super intelligent apes was the main thing. This movie is new, it came out at the cinemas at no more than a month, so you can find it in the websites or in the own cinemas.

This movie is about a virus that clashes human civilization. 10 years later, Caesar-leader of the Apes- stay in some place in the forest of California, while the human survivors stays on a building in  San Francisco. The Apes are pacifically, they don't want to fight, but later in the movie it happens something surprising that ends in a war between Apes and humans. In the movie we can find famous actors like Andy Serkis as Caesar, king of the Apes; Gary Oldman as Dreyfus, leader of the remaining people; Keri Rusell as a Nurse and Malcom's wife, and some other actors and actresses.

The movie is the last one that came out at now of the franchise. This franchise started at 1968 with they first movie, "Planet of the Apes" that had some goods critics. Talking about critics,  Tim Tobey from the "Daily Telegraph" told that there's evidence patience and intelligence dedicated to the filmmaking, whereas Richard Roeper mentioned that this could be the most intelligent, dare and braved Apes ever put on a film.

Preparing My News Proyect

1.- What is your piece of news about?
My piece of news is about a movie review of "Dawn of the planet of the Apes", in which I will record myself making a report about the movie and I will add some comments and critics.
2.- Select three sources of information and copy the links below.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2103281/

http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dawn_of_the_Planet_of_the_Apes

http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/dawn_of_the_planet_of_the_apes/

3.- Take note of 2 or 3 comments made by one of the people involved in the the sources you chose. Write the name of the person who said that.

Tim Tobey of "The Daily Telegraph": "There’s evident patience and intelligence to the filmmaking all over, as well as an engagement with genuine ideas about diplomacy, deterrence, law and leadership. However often it risks monkey-mad silliness, it’s impressively un-stupid.”

Richard Roeper on "The Chicago Sun-Times": This just might be the most braves, smartest and daring Apes ever put on a film".

Matt Reves, director of the movie: "There are a number of films and stories” to be told between the events of "Dawn" and the far-future world of the first "Planet of the Apes" film.

4.- Put together 3 ideas that you would like to include in your own news report.
a) Well, this movie has lots of expectations from the people. The reason is that the previous movie, "Rise of the planet of the Apes", was a good movie, it was revolutionary the using of super intelligent APes was the main thing.
b) This  movie  is part of a series that started at at 1968, with their first movie created, "Planet of the Apes". Well, the franchise consists of 8 movies, some series, books and novels which have very good rating and good critics.
c) The movie, directed by Matt Reves, talks the collapse of human civilization caused by a virus, and of course it talks about the Apes. During the movie, human survivors stays on a tower while the apes stays in their place. Apes don't want war, but later it happens something surprising that causes war between Apes and Humans.

Gladiator Screenplay Thingy

After Maximus Decimus Meridas has left the arena, Commodus goes on the colosseum and make a kind of sign at 2 Advisers saying they have to enter with Commodus.
Inside, Commodus starts walking around.

(The camera shows Commodus thinking what to say)

COMMODUS: That bastard of Maximus humilliated me in front of everybody, and I was forced to let him live, and I didn't like it at all! I'm the emperor, and I would make Maximus to respect civilized people, not slaves starved.

(The camera focus on the 2 Advisers seeing each other)

ADVISER 1: I'm agree with you sir, now the thing is HOW we do it. Does someone have an idea?

ADVISER 2: I propose by planning a trap. ( With a evil smile) First we order our soldiers to call Maximus and order him in your name to come and see you in the main living. Then, when he arrive, there will be you standing with a mortal sword and slice his legs and start torturing him.

(The camera focus on Commodus)

COMMODUS: Great idea soldier. I love the idea of "torture" so he suffer the same as me. He will be so sorry! HAHAHA!

(The camera shows all 3 laughing loudly. Then the camera focus on Commodus)

COMMODUS: WHY ARE YOU LAUGHING?! Only I can laugh. You 2, GET OUT!

(In the scene you can hear the voices of the Advisers)

ADVISERS: Well sir, mean while we will locate Maximus Decimus Meridas. HAPPY?!

(The Advisers get out of the room, Commodus stays alone)

Bloody Sunday Summary

Bloody Sunday prosecution charges 'unlikely'

The British government apologised for the army's actions after the publication of the report which took 12 years to complete. The report concluded that none of the victims were armed, that soldiers gave no warnings before opening fire and that the shootings were a "catastrophe" for Northern Ireland.

None of the witnesses were granted blanket immunity from prosecution. However all witnesses were immune from prosecutions on the grounds of self incrimination. This meant that the evidence given by a witness could not be used against them in any future legal proceedings.  Northern Ireland's Public Prosecution Service said it was considering whether to prosecute anyone, adding this decision would be taken "as expeditiously as possible" although it gave no date.

"The Director of Public Prosecutions, together with the Chief Constable, will consider the report to determine the nature and extent of any police enquiries and investigations required to enable informed decisions to be taken¨. Some legal experts, however, said wriggle room remains for prosecutions and, more likely, civil lawsuits against retired soldiers, particularly as some of the them were found to have lied to the Saville Inquiry.

When Mr Pollard, the lawyer representing British soldiers, was asked whether the report paved the way for the soldiers involved in Bloody Sunday to face criminal charges, he said: "No, it doesn't." "He cherry picked the evidence," the lawyer said, referring to Lord Saville.Meanwhile the head of the British army, General David Richards, backed the apology by the British Prime Minister David Cameron."The report leaves me in no doubt that serious mistakes and failings by officers and soldiers on that terrible day led to the deaths of 13 civilians who did nothing that could have justified their shooting".
The inquiry was originally budgeted to cost £11m and report findings were expected by 2002.The final bill was estimated at nearly 200 million pounds - making it the longest and most expensive inquiry in British legal history.

Rationale of Letter of Protest

Short and sweet…
Paragraph 1: what were you trying to do (tone, purpose, audience to reach?)
Paragraph 2: How did you try to do that…give examples from your piece.
Paragraph 3: How did you connect to your topic?

Example– I wrote a protest letter about the victims of Bloody Sunday in Northern Ireland. It was written with an serious tone and hopes to address the Prime Minister. In my letter,  I tried to present my point of  view  with phrase like “It can't be possible” and “I protest against”. I tried as well to use a sophisticated level of vocabulary with word choices like “I speak in name of all of us"and “In your authority of Prime Minister” finally I tried to use complex structures like one might see in a higher level publication such as The New York Times with sentences like “Now all the families are suffering” and “they all deserves minimum a life imprisonment ”. Using these elements I feel I reached my purpose set out in the task. This task addresses the topic “Taking a Stand”  and specially addresses the topic of the abuse of power. I think  a letter of protest helped me to  best express what I learned from the topics we studied in this unit and how I feel about them

E-petitions activity

A need of larger breaks in school
Responsible: The Mackay School
We should have larger breaks so we have enough time to eat our snacks and we could rest our body and mind from too many lessons, and they should regularize our schedule so we can have the same ammount of time for classes and break. If they agree to do it,we should respectfully happy and be more efficient at tests and at the time of study, our brains will rest.
Also, in break the time pass much faster that in class. Additionaly, sometimes we want to go to the kiosko to buy some tasty food but the row is too large and we spend all the break by waiting our turns. In fact, in some cases because of that we get late to our classes and the teachers don let us to eat in class so or we throw our snacks to the trash or we put them away on the school bag.

Technology Story Activity

We were at school by Saturday because we had to stay at detention, boring. I stayed with 2 friends, Park and Oyarce. As it is said in the detention paper, we had to come with the uniform N°1. We arrived at 9 am so tired and I was very thirsty because I didn't drank nothing for breakfast. So before going to the class I went to the drinking machine so I could buy a coke and I asked Jungi to come with me. I took out $1000 bill from my pocket and I entered it to the machine and pressed the coke button, wich costed $600. I took the coke but the machine didn't gave me the change. I started to press the change button but nothing happened. I was very mad while Jungi was laughing. So I realized the machine swallowed my change, so I started to walk up the stairs with Park to the class where Carlitos was waiting for us and Mr. Marcelo too. Well, at the end of the day I didn't drank nothing because every moment I saw the coke I remembered the stupid machine, so bad.

                                                                                                                                  Reñaca

Mr Prime Minister David Cameron
London, England

May 15th, 2014

Dear Sir James,

I'm writing to protest against the "Bloody Sunday" that leaved all of us schocked. As you know there was a protest in the 30 of January of 1972 by the people of Northern Ireland in which they where defending the civil rights, but finally all of them where shot by the british army after throwing a series of rocks to them. This fact is one that we won't forget.

I am particulary concerned about the people who died in the "Bloody Sunday" by te soldiers fault of being with so little pacience, all of the people where protesting in peace by they opinion and they answer by killing those people? Also, the first Prime Minister in that time sent to investigate the case and the conclusion "The soldiers where acting in they own defense" was outrageous. This could not be posible, and it is not a opinion that all of the soldiers should be in prison with minimun life imprisonment because all of them are a real shame for the British military. It is not posible that actitude of the soldiers with people that the only thing they where doing is marching and defending the civil rights in a country that I see doesn't allow them to do it. In demonstration of what I'm saying, when 15.000 people came to the victims funeral, in your opinion which was the reason all that people was present there?
In addition, all the families of the dead people are still suffering for that, and they know that sending prison all of the soldiers wil not bringh back those dead people. I suggest they make a reunion or something in wich finally make a formidable decision about the British military and say sorry to all the people in Nortern Ireland.
Without counting that after the protest the Ireland Embassy was on fire, manifestations in Milan, etc.

Please do everthing in your power of Prime Minister and make things better to all the people and civilizants that were present when this happened. More than a petition, I speak in name of all the sad families and of all the world that see us as a bunch of crazy monkeys men.

I look forward to your response.

Yours sincerely,

Gonzalo Vidal Pérez

Summary Sunday Bloody Sunday Report

The Bloody Sunday killings were unjustified and unjustifiable, the Prime Minister has said.

Thirteen marchers were shot dead on 30 January 1972 in Londonderry when British paratroopers opened fire on crowds at a civil rights demonstration.

Prime Minister David Cameron said he was "deeply sorry".
Fourteen others were wounded, one later died. The Saville Report is heavily critical of the Army and found that soldiers fired the first shot.

He said that the findings of the Saville Report were "shocking".

A huge cheer erupted in Guildhall Square in Derry as Mr Cameron delivered the findings which unequivocally blamed the Army for one of the most controversial days in Northern Ireland's history.

BBC legal affairs correspondent Clive Coleman said the decision whether or not to prosecute the soldiers would not be straightforward.

There needed to be sufficient evidence to provide a reasonable prospect of conviction - not an easy test after 38 years.

"If any defendent believes that the passage of time makes a fair trial impossible, they could argue the prosecution was an abuse of process," our correspondent said.

"Any prosecutions would also need to be judged to be in the public interest."

Braveheart Review

Braveheart is about the story of William Wallace, the main character of the movie, in which tells the story of the rivalty between England and Scotland. When he was a child, his father was killed by the English, and that's why he grew up with his uncle. In the "funeral", William met a girl, Murron, wich gave him a valuable flower in demonstration of her sorry for him.
Then it appears William but older, coming to a type of "carnaval", and he met again with Murron.
But this carnaval is interrupted by the English.

Then, William go to search Murron to go out riding a horse, and both, fallen in love, marry so they can be together. Right next of the marrige, they have a night of passion. But the day after, the English comes to the Scotish place, a old, disgusting man try to have sex with her, wich released William anger and he started distracting the English so Murron can escape and met there William. But when William arrives, he noted Murron wasn't there. She wasn't there because she was killed, and William promised revenge.

From now on, William, with his Scotish partners goes to England destroying all they have on the way for the independance of Scotland and they freedom. William was on the right way to be Scotland king, with his sword using it for revenge of his wife and his family.

In his fight against the english, William capture York, were he beheaded the nephew of the King of England. The victory's of William make Edward I, try to get peace with the scottish so he sent   the wife of his son, Elizabeth of France, to talk with Wallace. But the princess fall in love with William.

Finally, William is betray by some scottish and is taken prisioner by the english, who kill him in London..
The last word of Wallace was "FREEDOOMMM!!!".

After this Robert The Bruce is crowned the new King of Scotland, after fighting against the english, by the name of William Wallace. Robert obtain the independence of Scotland, a thing that William Wallace search all his life, but with no results.

My opinion about the movie is that is much help for us to understand the BIG difference between English and Scotish, about their history, and that the fact both are united by the isle Great Britain doesn't make them all equal, every natin has they own history, culture, language, traditions, food, etc. A very good movie, with very good fight scenes, atractive charcters and environment and some funny moments. I give him 9/10.

Catcher in the Rye Chapter 4 Questions

1) Describe the relationship between Holden and Stradlater.  Are they friends?  Why or why not?  Refer to specific actions the characters take or things they say to one another in the text.

A) Their relationship is an irregular one, Holden describes in a good way Stradlater ( conversation with Ackley) by beeing his roomate, but he doesn't really likes him by the way he acts and the way he behaves. Because Holden doesn't like the way he looks the goddam mirror, how handsome he is and his ignorance in front of him. When Holden ask him by Jane, Stradlater don't know much about her at the same time he razor's by looking the mirror all the conversation, he's a real bastard by that way.

2)How does Holden feel about Jane Gallagher?  What actions or remarks demonstrate his attitude toward her?

A) Holden was impressed when he listened the name of Jane Gallagher because she used to live right next door of Holden's place. His attidude towards her remarcks when he started asking to Stradlater about her and started to tell him things they used to do like playing checkers.

3) What is the reason Holden gives for not going downstairs and saying hello to Jane?  In your opinion, is this the real reason?  Why or why not?

A) The reason Holden gives is that he sworn Jane went to Shipley and not in the Annex and he wasn't in the mood to do it. In my opinion this is fake because, in the first place Holden always lies, and in the second place I think he didn't walk down 'cause he didn't dared to say hello to Jane, he was to embarrassed to do it.

The Catcher in the Rye Questions

1) Holden was disagree all the time and mad. He was faking all the conversation.

2) When Dr.Thurmer tells Holden that life is a game with rules, Holden "agree", when in his own mind it was telling the opposite. Holden was faking all the time; Dr.Thurmer tried to say that life put the rules and decide your destiny, and if you don't fllow them, life will punish you.

4) Holden left Elkton Hills because there where to much phonies, specially the headmaster.

5) Those statements tells me that Holden sometimes act in a very inmature way, like a 12 years old kid, when he was really 17. Also I can say that Holden normally acts like a dumb when he is really smart.

6) Holden characterize himself to tell us how good he is at lying, but at the same time how terrible it is. He lies about places he have to go or being agree in something. I think he lies to get oue ot uncomfortable situations.

7) What's ironic is that reading makes you learn very much, like expanding your vocabulary, understand literature, etc. What Holden says doesn't make sense, because it will be like at the moment of reading he doesn't make sure to understand what he's reading.

8) Holden's actitude in front of Ackley is disturbing, mad, angry, etc. He feels angry because Ackley can't shut up, he takes Holden's stuff and starts to examine them, a person that can't let you in peace.

9) Ackley describes Stradlater as a person who believe's he's smarter than anyone, that he's superior than anyone, in other words, sonuvabitch. But Holden describes it as a nice and friendly person - It could be that Holden describe it like that for being his roomate-.

10) Feeling sorry for someone is more like being sad fopr something or someone. Caring will be like taking importance or care about something, being worry for it.
